Boronda Road Congestion Relief Project
Wallace Group provided final design services for the first phase of a series of multilane roundabouts and roadway widening along a two‑mile stretch of Boronda Road in Salinas. Classified as a major arterial, Boronda Road serves a mix of urban, residential, and agricultural areas, as well as nearby schools and commercial retail zones. The corridor was originally a two‑lane roadway with signalized intersections operating at or near unacceptable levels. As development continues north of the corridor, the roadway had been envisioned for future widening to six lanes.
In an earlier phase, however, the Wallace Group design team completed an Intersection Control Evaluation comparing a six‑lane signalized corridor with a four‑lane roundabout (yield‑controlled) corridor. Based on performance, safety, and operational benefits, multilane roundabouts were ultimately selected.
Wallace Group then advanced final design for the multilane roundabout at Boronda Road and McKinnon Street. Work included the collection, treatment, and conveyance of stormwater within the roadway median; the retention and detention of combined agricultural irrigation and stormwater runoff adjacent to the project; and the installation and upgrade of a sewer trunk line based on the City’s Sewer Master Plan.
For residents and visitors alike, this essential infrastructure is supporting safer and more efficient travel for all users.
Project Highlights:
Stormwater & Irrigation Management: Integrated collection, treatment, and conveyance of stormwater in the roadway median, plus retention/detention for combined stormwater and agricultural irrigation runoff.
Utility Improvements: Installation and upgrade of a sewer trunk line in accordance with the City’s Sewer Master Plan.
Multimodal Enhancements: Buffered bike lanes, pedestrian‑activated crossings, shared‑use paths, and transit bus pull‑outs to improve safety and access for all users.
