Engineering Construction Inspector

Office Location: Salinas, CA

Project Locations: (including but not limited to): Counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and San Luis Obispo.

Job Type: Full-time or Part-time, open to discussion, depends on applicant

Experience/Duties: Successful candidate will be responsible for construction inspection of various projects of both private and public work projects. Construction Inspector will work closely with the project manager/resident engineer to perform the observation, inspection, and testing required to confirm conformance with the contract documents, including plans and specifications.

  1. Act as primary on-site construction inspector and field representative for the Construction Management team
  2. Perform observation of construction work in progress for compliance with contract documents
  3. Coordinate sampling and testing of various construction materials
  4. Review construction stakes and verify layout
  5. Calculate and document quantities and review payment applications
  6. Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and other construction documents
  7. Work closely with various public agencies, public utilities, engineers, and construction contractors
  8. Knowledge of the construction of grading and earthwork, roadway construction (full depth reclamation, asphalt paving, slurry seal, etc.), underground utilities, concrete formwork and rebar, and pumps and controls is desired.
  9. Ability to read and interpret construction schedules
  10. Assumes responsibility of administering portions of the contract, which includes preparing change orders, tracking quantities, and pay requests.
  11. Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


  1. Minimum seven years of relevant progressive experience in project management, construction management, or inspection of Public Works projects
  2. Or four years experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, preferred but not required.
  3. Prior construction experience preferred.
  4. Requires a California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  5. Ability to read construction plans and specifications.
  6. Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively
  7. Detailed time management skills and ability to multitask between projects

Physical Requirements/Hours: Ability to sit at a desk and use computer with related tools for an average 8 hour work shift. Vision to independently view computer screen or printed materials and graphics. Possess mobility to work in an outside setting including construction sites and in traffic for an average

8 hour shift. Must be prepared to bend, crouch, lift and twist to carry out job duties. Ability to operate motor vehicle. Hearing and speech skills to effectively communicate in English in person and over the telephone or two-way radio. A valid California driver's license and clean driving record are required.

40 hours per week, or projects specific hours may be available. Overnight travel will be required based on project needs.
